APPLE juice from hundred-year-old Welsh trees, leek and white wine cheese and St. David’s day hampers…just some of the award-winning fare on offer at a new website devoted to sourcing and selling Welsh food.
DeliciousWales.com, the brainchild of Richard Carnell, 21, of Cross Keys, came into being while he was researching opening his own Welsh-produce-only delicatessen.
Mr Carnell realised there was nothing of its kind available online and teamed-up with his mother, Rosemary Carnell, to found the website.
Combining a shop, recipe section, news and events pages, the website aims to showcase the best in organic, high quality Welsh foods and provides information about how it’s made and where it comes from.
The philosophy behind the website is simple: “It’s important for people to buy local food when they can - not only to eat better but to support small farms, businesses and help grow the Welsh economy.
“It’s better quality than mass-produced food and the people are making it because they love it, not because they’re chasing profits,” said Mr Carnell.
Mr Carnell has been involved with local produce since he was seven, when his grandmother encouraged him to bake cakes.
Today he still finds time for his culinary passion, despite studying law at Oxford.
But when most students are desperately trying to fly the nest, how does he find going into business with his mother?
“It’s very good,” he said, “I’d rather go into business with a family member than anyone else, because the relationship will always survive any argument.”
